Francis Le Gresley elected Jersey’s new senator

The people of Jersey have elected Francis Le Gresley as their new senator.

The by-election was called after the automatic removal of the former senator Stuart Syvret, who had been absent from the island for six months.

Mr Le Gresley won in all but one of the island’s 12 parishes. Stuart Syvret was in second place with Patrick Ryan coming third.

Unofficial figures showed a low turnout of about 30%.

Mr Le Gresley, 59, was born in Jersey and educated at St Lawrence Primary and Victoria College.

He worked in the finance sector for more than 20 years and has spent the past 18 years as manager of Jersey’s Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

Treasury Minister Senator Philip Ozouf said the new senator would have a steep learning curve as the government tackles spending cuts.
